Getting Taller
Being called ‘shorty’ or ‘lanky’ is not something people of unusual height, either tall or short, are unfamiliar with. As a rule, tall people tend to stoop their backs, as if attempting to look like all the other people. On the contrary, those who lack height try to compensate it not only with heels but with being ambitious, witty, popular or even aggressive. In this article we will tell you about several height-increasing techniques based on physical exercise, and more. We hope these will help you gain the height you want. Even if you are far from being young, don’t be too quick to reach the final judgment, just try. If you are serious about getting taller, you simply have to use whatever method you come across.
Attention! The authors of this article are not responsible for your necessity to change your wardrobe because you got taller. Still certain about gaining height? Read on then!
As anthropologists say, human average height changed with years. Neanderthal men of the stone age were not tall at all, about 160 cm. Cro-Magnon men, on the contrary, were the tallest, their average height being about 183 cm. These are most similar to the modern man. Later on, during the Middle Ages, people got drastically shorter, so it’s not technically correct to imagine knights being very tall. Judging by the armor in the museums, the average man was about 165-170 cm tall, sometimes even shorter than 160 cm. Time passed and average human height increased.
Today male average height is 176 cm, 164 cm being the average female height. Let us give some more general information. Girls keep getting taller until they’re 17-19yo, and boys increase their height until they’re 19-22 years of age. After 22 you can increase your height only by fighting back problems, such as stooping, or curing lateral curvature and other physical defects. Doing so may give you a whole extra of 3-5, or even 10 cm.
As you get older, your height decreases. When you reach 60, you may get 2-2.5 cm shorter, and 5-6 cm shorter when you are 80. Your height even changes during the day! In the evening you can lose 1-2 cm of your height. After a weightlifting workout people can get 2-3 cm shorter. It happens because your intervertebral disks get closer to each other.
On the whole, it has been proved that if you do a reasonable amount of exercise regularly, your bones get firmer and show growth. So, keeping fit is also a way of gaining height.
How tall can your child be?
This is the kind of question asked by many parents. There are certain formulas which might help:
Boys: (father height + mother height) x 0.54…4.5
Girls: (father height + mother height) x 0.51…7.5
In most cases this formula gives realistic results, though during early years (before 8 years) and during puberty the formula can be less accurate.
If you think your child is abnormally short, try your best to find out about the reasons. It could be illnesses, traumas, or a bad diet. Consult with a doctor and determine what has to be done to eliminate the cause.
You may get particularly worried if negative factors start taking effect during the years of biggest growth (11-16 years). It may be a problem trying to catch up with the tall crowd later on. Don’t miss the moment and measure your kid’s height at least 2 times a year.
What influences growth?
A kid’s height is perhaps the most sensitive parameter influenced by your child’s health condition. To grow properly, your offspring needs proper nutrition, good social surroundings, a balance of hormones and no chronic diseases. The final height is determined by the height of parents, grandparents and relatives from more distant past; climate and geographical location are also important. Nutrition is also crucial. Some expert say you can gain 10% of height just by sticking to a proper diet.
Genetic background determines the growth potential a child can make us of when growing up. Heights of both parents are equally important for the growing kid. Shorter parents tend to give birth to shorter children. If both parents are below average height, often boys are even shorter than their father, while girls have lower height that their mothers.
Then, pay attention to your diet. Some think they buy the most expensive foodstuffs from best stores, and this is called proper nutrition. Wrong. Proper nutrition is a reasonable combination of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and other important elements, plus vitamins and minerals. Vitamins are not just vitamin C, and minerals are not just calcium. Because of modern agriculture the soil lacks minerals which are drained by the people and replaced with artificial fertilizers. Foodstuffs produced on exhausted soil naturally lack vital microelements and vitamins.
Speaking of vitamins, the situation is also far from being perfect. Your body needs vitamins for two important processes. Firstly, vitamins are catalysts for your metabolism. Secondly, vitamins neutralize the harmful environmental effects. While humans took enough vitamins and minerals from food hundreds of years ago, today, with all the ecological decline nowadays, we need a lot more vitamins to cover our needs. What is more, the food we eat today contains less vitamins than it used to. There are several reasons for this:
- we eat less food because we do less physical work;
- today’s food is mostly processed, which destroys the vitamins;
- fruit and vegetables are gathered unripe to increase their shelf life, while many vitamins exist only in ripe fruit.
Make sure you consume more vitamin A, known also as the growth vitamin. Eating carrot is perfect. If you can handle half a kilo of carrot per day, it’s just perfect.
Many people think you can consume plenty of vitamins and ‘store’ them in your body. Some claim they eat lots of strawberry in summer to accumulate enough vitamin C for the entire year. This is not true. Vitamin C is not stored in your body, and neither are other vitamins. They leave your body in about 3-4 hours you take them, which means you have to replenish your vitamin deposits regularly. You won’t get enough vitamins by eating regular food, so you have to use special pills. You can choose cheaper and expensive pills, though of course if you are serious about gaining height, you have to make sure you use things which really work.
Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Sleep as much as your body needs, feed it when necessary and with proper food, don’t smoke and drink. Anything else you do is senseless without these basic rules.
Make sure you exercise enough. As you probably understand, exercise is crucial for getting taller. Pay particular attention to stretching exercises, jumping, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, running, and so on. You don’t have to display outstanding results, but working out is important to help your body gain height. Opt for special exercises, pool visits 2-3 times per week, saunas, warm baths 37-29 degrees Celsius with sea salt and aromas, massage, and so on.
